Mavrynskyi Maidan is a giant earthen structure of unknown purpose. It consists of about 14,000 mounds and flat grounds called "maidans." This structure resembles a mysterious sign from a bird's perspective. There are many versions of Maidan's origin and purpose. The most common version is that the hills are the result of illegal excavation of burial mounds in the past. According to another version, the mounds are fortifications of Ukrainian Cossacks. One more hypothesis says that there was a saltpeter cave in the distant past.

However, the mystical hypothesis is the most popular among the people as there is coincidence between Mavrynskyi Maidan pattern and the position of the sun depending on the time of year. There is a theory that this place served as an observatory, a temple or a place for sacrifice for early humans.
