When talking about barbecues in May 2022 and Ukraine’s poor preparation for war, one name inevitably comes up, Andrii Naumov. A former favorite of President Zelenskyy and a close associate of Ivan Bakanov, Naumov held a senior post in the SSU and was responsible for preparing Ukraine’s southern regions for war.
Who is he? Andrii Naumov joined the SSU shortly after Ivan Bakanov became its head in 2019. He later took charge of the Internal Security Department, which was upgraded to a Main Directorate, expanding his authority and influence within the agency. Why is that?
The editor-in-chief of Censor.NET linked Naumov’s flash-like career rise to his alleged role as Bakanov’s "wallet". In effect, his own "tame Yermak."
In October 2020, investigative journalists from Schemes exposed Naumov’s luxury apartments and estates registered in his elderly mother’s name. Instead of punishment, Zelenskyy promoted him to brigadier general, a rank that was later revoked when Naumov fled the country like a rat on the eve of Russia’s full-scale invasion, taking cash and diamonds with him.
