Russia seeks to revive USSR, we are safe only thanks to Ukraine - Sandu

Moldovan President Maia Sandu believes that Russia would continue its expansion, including by sending troops into Moldova, if it successfully seized Ukraine.

This was stated by Sandu in an interview with Financial Times, informs Цензор.НЕТ referring to "European Truth".

"I do not believe that they (Russians - ed.) would have stopped at the border. Today, we are safe only thanks to Ukraine," the Moldovan President emphasized, adding that in the first weeks of the full-scale invasion, when such a threat still existed, the country focused on accepting refugees.

To the question of whether Sandu planned to leave Moldova in the event of a Russian attack, she said no.

"I would have stayed (in Moldova - ed.), but we expected that we would have to help as many of our people as possible to go to a safe place, which is Romania," the president added.

According to Sandu, the Russians are trying to "remake the Soviet Union" with their aggression against Ukraine.

"They want to bring back the old days. And we don't want that. Moldova was part of the buffer zone for 30 years, and for us it meant poverty, corruption, bad governance, emigration. We want to be part of the democratic world," she emphasized.

According to the Financial Times journalist, during their conversation, "Sandu rarely drank, but she was eager to toast Ukraine's victory."
