If Peace Talks Fail, Turchynov Will Initiate Martial Law

In case of peace talks failure, Speaker of Parliament Oleksandr Turchynov will initiate the imposition of martial law in the coming days.

He stated this at a closed session of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukrainska Pravda reports citing one of the deputies who attended the meeting.

According to the source, Turchynov announced that on Monday, he will schedule consultations regarding an extraordinary session to be held on Tuesday if progress in peace resolution is not achieved within the next few days.

"Turchynov said that he had talked to the President twice on Wednesday, and the latter felt that the peace plan would work. Otherwise, consultations regarding the extraordinary session on Tuesday with the agenda of [introducing] martial law will be held on Monday," the source said.
