Ukraine Accedes to International Arms Trade Treaty

The treaty is designed to raise the standards of the arms trade at the international level.

This is stated by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Censor.NET reports.

"On September 23 in New York, as part of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin took part in the signing ceremony of the Arms Trade Treaty by Ukraine," the statement says. It is noted that the adoption of the treaty was preceded by painstaking work of delegations of all member states of the UN and a lengthy negotiation process within the UN General Assembly.

"Ukraine has consistently supported this process and having signed the Treaty, confirmed its disposition to streamline the international arms trade, in particular by improving the export control systems of the member states," the statement says.

This multilateral agreement was approved by the UN General Assembly on April 2, 2013, and on June 3 of that year, became available for signing. Its main focus is the implementation of the internationally agreed high standards in the arms trade and reduction of the risks illegal arms trafficking.
