Ukraine’s president announces martial law termination

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has announced the termination of martial law in 10 regions of the country.

As reported by a correspondent for Censor.NET, the head of state said at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC).

"The martial law expires today, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m. This is my decision of principle. It is based on the analysis of all the components of the current security situation in the country," he said.

Poroshenko guaranteed that the presidential election would be held on March 31, 2019.

"If it were not for the elections, we would have asked Rada to extend the martial law," the president said.

On Nov. 26, Ukraine's parliament gave the green light to a presidential decree on the introduction of martial law for 30 days in 10 regions of Ukraine – Vinnytsia region, Luhansk region, Mykolaiv region, Odesa region, Sumy region, Kharkiv region, Chernihiv region, Kherson region, Donetsk region and Zaporizhia region, as well as the inland waters of the Azov-Kerch water area.
