U.S. to send Ukraine advanced Abrams tanks, but with an alternative to secret armor - Politico

United States plans to send Kyiv an Abrams main battle tank in its advanced M1A2 configuration, rather than older A1 version that is in storage.
It was informed by Politico with reference to three participants in the relevant negotiations, informs Censor.NЕТ.
It is noted that the US plans to decommission the Abrams M1A1 version in the next few years.
Externally similar to the A1, the A2 has a redesigned weapons command station with improved optics for targeting and an independent thermal imaging device that allows the commander to scan targets independently in all weather and combat conditions.
The Abrams M1A2's equipment also helps to quickly track friendly vehicles, identify enemy positions, and process artillery requests.
At the same time, the 31 tanks planned for Ukraine will not include the armor made of a secret alloy that makes the new army version so deadly.
Federal policy prohibits the export of such Abrams. There are other armor packages that the US can provide to foreign customers.
As a reminder, on January 25, US President Joe Biden announced that the United States would officially transfer 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
