Russia is mapping the most important underwater infrastructure systems of Europe and the United States in the Atlantic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea. This is done for a possible attack.

This was stated by NATO Assistant Secretary General for Intelligence and Security David Cutler, Censor.NET reports with reference to TSN.

According to him, the Russian Federation can target submarine cables and critical infrastructure facilities of the West. Moscow wants to get leverage on those countries that supply weapons to Ukraine.

"Russia is actively engaged in mapping allies' critical infrastructure both on land and on the seabed, an effort supported by Russian military and civilian intelligence services," Cutler said.

Such underwater cables account for 95% of Internet communications. Also, financial transactions in the amount of about 10 trillion dollars pass through them every day.

Cuttler also pointed to Russia's military strategy, which involves the rapid destruction of vital infrastructure in the early stages of a conflict. The Russian Armed Forces are trying to apply this tactic in Ukraine. According to him, Moscow's efforts are partly led by the underwater reconnaissance program of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

According to Cutler, while China is also active in the Atlantic, it is more interested in buying infrastructure than testing vulnerabilities.
