Ex-rector Melnyk acquitted by court, - lawyer
The former MP, ex-rector of the National State Tax Service University of Ukraine Petro Melnyk was acquitted by the Irpin court of the Kyiv region on July 8.
As reported by Censor.NET citing Ukrainski Novyny, this was announced by his lawyer Serhii Laputko.
"The court acquitted him yesterday," he said.
According to him, the announcement of the verdict lasted eight hours.
He says the prosecutor's office has 30 days to appeal the decision and it seems willing to do so.
If the decision comes into force, all the arrests imposed on Melnyk's property will be lifted.
As reported earlier, the Brovary city district court of the Kyiv region acquitted policemen Vasyl Vdovichenko and Mykola Bedrii, accused of helping Melnyk escape from house arrest.
July 27, 2013 Melnyk was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe of 120 000 hryvnias.
He was placed under house arrest. Aug. 8, 2013 Melnyk removed the electronic monitoring bracelet and fled to the United States.
Prosecutor's office charged two policemen with negligence resulting in the escape of the suspect.
April 1, 2014 Melnyk returned to Ukraine and was arrested by police.
