Atlantic Council and more than 40 experts call on Biden to launch Ukraine’s NATO accession process

At next year’s NATO summit in Washington, D.C., decisions should be made that will speed up Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

This was stated by the Director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Centre, US Ambassador to Ukraine in 2003-06 John Herbst during a special event at the Kyiv Security Forum, where the Atlantic Council's appeal to the US President on Ukraine's accession to NATO was presented, Censor.NET reports.

According to the diplomat, the creation of this document is related to the July NATO summit in Vilnius, as many were disappointed with its results.

"Therefore, we have created a group of experts, specialists, former high-ranking officials to decide what can be done to speed up Ukraine's accession to NATO through the Washington summit to be held next year," Herbst said.

He noted that this group includes very respected professionals who have held high positions: former ambassadors, diplomats, and heads of military structures in Europe.

"Our support is not philanthropy, but a smart investment and protection of American interests. And we call for a strong and unequivocal response to this threat. If Putin were to defeat Ukraine - and he won't as long as America supports Ukraine - he would attack Poland and the Baltic states, and the cost of that aggression to the United States and NATO would be higher than the current assistance to Ukraine," Herbst said.

"Therefore, we need a decisive step towards Ukraine's NATO membership, which should be taken at the summit in Washington," concluded the Director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Centre.

The Kyiv Security Forum, founded by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation, is the main platform of our country for discussing issues of war and peace, national and global security.
