Lack of decision by Congress on Ukraine inspires Putin, - McFaul

The lack of a decision by the US Congress to allocate aid to Ukraine inspires America’s enemies.

Such an opinion was expressed by the Director of the Freeman-Spoli Institute for International Studies of Stanford University, Ambassador Michael McFaul during the online discussion of the Kyiv Security Forum, founded by the Arsenii Yatsenyuk Foundation "Open Ukraine", Censor.NET informs.

"The United States needs a debate on migration reform, we should not avoid it, but it should be accelerated in order not to hold Ukrainian soldiers hostage," he said, commenting on the main obstacle on the way to a decision.

"However, I feel that many members of Congress do not understand the strategic implications for American security. And we look powerless because we cannot do what is in our interests. This inspires all our enemies, not only Putin but also in other countries. All this affects American national interests," Michael McFaul emphasized.

He also noted that at the moment it is essential that Congress pass the decision to support Ukraine, but it is also important to pass the relevant legislation that would allow the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.

Commenting on the prospects of Ukraine joining NATO, McFaul said that currently, the administration of US President Joe Biden is not inclined to make a positive decision regarding Ukraine's membership in the Alliance. At the same time, in his opinion, a formal invitation could be given to Ukraine at the upcoming NATO summit to be held in Washington in 2024, which would be an important signal regarding such prospects.

"It will be symbolic to give an invitation at the upcoming summit. It would be an important signal that the "train is already at the station", it just takes some time for Ukraine to join," he summarized.
