"Kyivstar" does not confirm SSU’s information about hackers’ months-long stay in system

Kyivstar mobile operator does not confirm the information that Russian hackers have been in its system since May 2023, as previously stated by Illia Vitiuk, head of the SSU’s cybersecurity department.

"Kyivstar does not confirm the information disseminated on social media and some media outlets about the alleged months-long access of hackers "inside" the company to subscribers' personal data and their leakage. The official investigation into the cyberattack on Kyivstar's network that took place on December 12, 2023, is still ongoing. Various versions are being considered, none of which is final yet. All information on the cyberattack investigation is available on the website of the Security Service of Ukraine, which is directly involved in this process. During the investigation, there were no facts of personal data leakage of subscribers," the company said in a statement.
The company added that the cyberattack on the mobile operator's network affected some of the technological systems responsible for communication, "but they were restored within a few days thanks to the professional work of the company's specialists and partners."
"Kyivstar also states that it has already taken additional measures for cyber defense, "in particular, strengthened access control, implemented additional server and workstation control systems, and plans to take further steps to strengthen cybersecurity."
Earlier, Illia Vitiuk, head of the SSU's cybersecurity department, told Reuters that hackers had full access to Kyivstar's system since at least May 2023.
Recall that on the morning of December 12, Kyivstar mobile operator experienced a large-scale failure. Kyivstar reported about a powerful hacker attack.
