France will bring all its political and diplomatic weight to the European Council summit to ensure that Ukraine receives €50 billion in aid.

This was stated by the newly appointed French Foreign Minister Stéphane Sejourne at a joint briefing with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"The European Council will meet for a summit on 1 February, and we must do everything we can to preserve the unity of Europe on the occasion of this meeting. France will bring all its political and diplomatic weight to ensure that the €50bn aid to Ukraine is allocated," he said.

Sejourne noted that these funds will help the Ukrainian budget finance the needs of education, healthcare, justice, and other social and economic needs, as well as contribute to the energy transition and modernisation of Ukraine's transport infrastructure.

As reported, Stéphane Sejourne arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday, 13 January.

During the European Council on 14-15 December, European leaders failed to adopt amendments to the EU's 2024-2027 multi-annual budget, which provides for the allocation of €50 billion in aid to Ukraine. This decision was blocked by Hungary. Therefore, the leaders agreed to continue discussing the budget during a special summit in early 2024.
