Kaniv PSPS is to be moved underground - Ukrhydroenergo

Ukraine is currently making changes to the construction of the Kaniv pumped storage plant. It is planned to move it underground.

This was announced by Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, liga.net reports.

"We are making changes to the construction project of the Kaniv PSPS. It should be inaccessible to the enemy. Therefore, there are plans to build it underground," he said in an interview with the publication.

According to the head of Ukrhydroenergo, the biggest challenges for power engineers now are to recover as quickly as possible, protect facilities and think about the future.

"We have to build the infrastructure so that it is sustainable," Syrota summarized.

Construction of the 3,600 MW Kaniv PSPS began in 1986, but work was halted in 1991. The updated project, adapted to the current state of Ukraine's energy system, envisages the construction of a PSPS with a capacity of up to 1000 MW.

In total, during the full-scale war, Ukrhydroenergo's plants were attacked 120 times. The company lost about 45% of its hydroelectric power generation.
