British MPs call for at least 25.5 billion pounds of frozen Russian assets to be transferred to Ukraine

A group of British MPs, as well as politicians from allied countries, are calling on the UK government to take steps to transfer Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine.

This is stated in a letter published by The Times, Censor.NET reports.

They state that such actions are strategically important to compensate for the damage caused by the war and ensure justice.

The MPs emphasize that the legal transfer of at least 25.5 billion pounds stored in the UK will send an important signal to the aggressor and help prevent future conflicts.

In October, the UK has already announced a £2.26 billion loan to Ukraine as part of a broader aid package from the G7 countries. At the same time, Mike Martin MP noted that legal challenges should not stand in the way of asset transfers:

"There is an overwhelming moral, strategic and legal argument in favor of using Russian state assets to support Ukraine in its military actions. This issue has never been more urgent than now, when the new US administration may withdraw support for Ukraine."

The letter was signed by more than a dozen British MPs, as well as parliamentarians from Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, and Finland.

As noted, the UK has the largest frozen Russian reserves outside the EU, and the parliamentarians are convinced that the use of these funds will not harm financial stability, but rather increase pressure on Russia, which is already in a difficult economic situation.

As a reminder, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal recently said that Ukraine plans to confiscate Russia's frozen assets in 2025.
