"It’s political hit job": Irpin Mayor Markushyn explains why case was opened against him on eve of session

Mayor of Irpin Oleksandr Markushyn

The mayor of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushyn, was served with a notice of suspicion of illegal border crossing, the official called the case a "political hit job."

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to his telegram channel.

"Today I received a framed-up suspicion. It alleges that I went abroad illegally in August 2022, allegedly not to help the military, but to see my 2-year-old son. So what am I suspected of? Yes, I did. I picked up two Mavic drones and went to congratulate my son Mark on his birthday, who was in Italy as a refugee and whom I had not seen for six months since the beginning of our defense of Irpin. He took Deputy Oleksandr Pashchynskyi with him to see his family as well, and invited him to Mark's birthday party with Volodymyr Karpliuk. That's when they filmed the "video evidence" of my terrible "crime," the mayor said.

He emphasized that he is the sole guardian of his son and has the right to travel abroad without any additional permits. At the same time, Markushyn knew that he would return with military aid, so he formalized the trip.

The mayor also stated that Karpliuk was the one who ordered the case. In this way, Karpliuk allegedly wants to at least temporarily remove him from office "on the eve of a critical session" at which deputies are to consider canceling the lease of land under illegal buildings to which Karpliuk is related.
