Special tribunal on Russian aggression may start working in 2025 – Council of Europe Secretary General Berset

Ален Берсе про підтримку України

A special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine may begin work in 2025 when the relevant international agreement is approved.

This was stated by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset in an interview with the editor of European Pravda, Serhii Sydorenko, Censor.NET reports.

According to him, the Coalition of States, which is involved in the creation of the tribunal, has already reached a compromise on all key issues. The next step will be to agree on the text of the international agreement and its approval at a diplomatic conference in 2025.

"Our goal is to negotiate the text of the international agreement this year. And then we need to hold a diplomatic conference to adopt this document - and this should also take place in 2025," said Berset.

The Council of Europe Secretary General emphasized that in order for the tribunal to start working, it is necessary to create its organizational structure and provide it with the necessary resources, including judges and prosecutors.

Berset also noted that the initiative to establish the tribunal is extremely important, as the crime of aggression by Russia has already been recognized by the United Nations, and the world cannot wait.

"We cannot just wait when the crime of aggression has long been recognized by the United Nations. And if there is no court that deals with this crime, we need to create one! So our ambition is to establish the tribunal this year," he summarized.
