Baltic States disconnected from Russia’s power grid without incident, - Latvian Prime Minister Silinia

Silinia on disconnecting from the power grid from Russia

The process of disconnecting the Baltic states from the Russian energy grid went without incident.

This was stated by Latvian Prime Minister Eika Silina, as quoted by Delfi, Censor.NET reports.

"This is the largest and most important project to ensure energy independence and regional security in recent decades. And we did it a year earlier than planned," the Latvian Prime Minister said.

It is noted that after the Baltic states were disconnected from the Russian energy grid, Silinia held telephone conversations with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal and EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen.

They discussed the Baltic states' accession to the European energy grid. Also during the conversation, Silinia expressed satisfaction that the transition process went without incident and thanked the Baltic power system operators and other responsible institutions for their work, which made the transition possible.

According to the newspaper, the next steps will be related to modernizing the system, expanding the use of renewable energy sources, and strengthening the region's security.

Finally, the Latvian prime minister noted that joining the European power grid would increase energy security in the region and ensure independent and reliable control over the frequency of the Baltic power grid.

In his turn, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal called the disconnection of the Baltic states from the common energy system with Russia a "significant day."

"Today is a significant day. Estonia, along with Latvia and Lithuania, has disconnected from the Russian frequency band, and tomorrow we will synchronize with continental Europe. Joining the Schengen area opened the borders of Europe for us, and now we are joining the world's largest frequency zone," ERR quoted the Estonian Prime Minister as saying.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Palutskas also commented on the event. On social networking site X, he said that the disconnection of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia from the Russian energy system strengthens their energy security and ensures stability.

"This morning, Lithuania, together with Latvia and Estonia, took a big step towards energy independence by disconnecting from the Russian-controlled power grid. This step strengthens our energy security, deepens our integration with Europe and ensures stable and reliable electricity supplies," the politician said.

Earlier it was reported that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia disconnected their power systems from the networks of Russia and Belarus on February 8.

Before disconnecting from the power grid that connects the Baltic states to the power systems of Russia and Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia did not rule out provocations.
