IAEA: Shahed’s strike on ChNPP: consequences are still being eliminated, radiation background within normal limits

Fire on shelter cladding has been localised

Ukrainian firefighters are still working to eliminate the consequences of a Russian drone strike on the shelter of Unit 4 of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the press center of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

As noted, the IAEA team on the scene was granted unrestricted access to the explosion site and conducted an extensive survey to assess the damage to the New Safe Confinement (NSC), where a drone had punched a hole in the roof of a large arch-shaped structure built to prevent the release of radioactive substances from the damaged reactor and protect it from external hazards.

"The IAEA experts saw smoke from the roof of the NSC and smelled burnt plastic... Despite the significant damage caused by the drone strike, the IAEA team was informed that radiation levels at the site had not changed. This was also confirmed by the team's own measurements," the statement said.

"It was certainly a very serious incident when a drone hit a large protective structure at a major nuclear facility and damaged it. As I have said repeatedly during this devastating war, an attack on a nuclear facility is absolutely unacceptable and should never happen," said IAEA Director Rafael Grossi.

Russian attack on the sarcophagus of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant

To recap, President Zelenskyy said in the morning that a Russian attack drone with an explosive warhead had hit the shelter of Unit 4 of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant on the night of 14 February.

The IAEA has confirmed a drone strike on the protective sarcophagus of the fourth unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The spokesman for the Russian dictator Dmitry Peskov denied that Russian troops had attacked the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on the international community to force Russia to peace by force to prevent a global catastrophe following Russia's attack on the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stressed that the shelter arch had been significantly damaged.
