Baerbock: Fake peace will only help Russia regroup for new military campaigns
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for keeping a "cool head" after the talks between US representatives and Russian envoys.
This is stated in her statement posted on the website of the German Foreign Ministry, Censor.NET reports citing the EP.
Baerbock said that a false peace would only give Russia a break for new military campaigns, but would not help Ukraine, Europe, or the United States.
"We must not allow ourselves to be swayed by the recent discussions and must continue to keep a cool head - also given the diversity of voices that reach us across the Atlantic. Lasting peace in Europe can only be achieved together with Europe. On the other hand, diminishing Europe's role only plays into the hands of the Russian agenda," Baerbock said.
She emphasized that Ukraine can only negotiate from a position of strength, so the West must continue to strengthen its defense capabilities. According to her, the EU is currently preparing a new large package of military aid worth a billion euros, including artillery, air defense and drones.
"We, as the EU, cannot stand still. We will also have to increase our assistance to Ukraine at the bilateral level and determine the budgetary course for this, whether we want to or not," the minister emphasized.
Baerbock also emphasized that Germany and Europe are doing everything possible for peace and security on the continent.
"No one but Putin started or wanted this war in the heart of Europe. But no one in Europe should have any doubts that we are not doing everything possible for peace and security in Europe and for the future of our children," she concluded.
