Every fifth child in Ukraine has lost close relative due to war - UNICEF

Every fifth child in Ukraine reported the loss of a close relative or friend because of the war.
This is reported by UNICEF, Censor.NET informs.
"All these years, death and destruction have been a daily routine for every child in Ukraine. This level of violence causes enormous suffering for children and deprives them of a true childhood," said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.
According to the survey, one in five children in Ukraine has lost a close relative or friend since Russia's full-scale invasion began.
Compared to 2023, the number of child casualties has increased by 50%. In total, more than 2,520 children have been killed or injured since February 2022, but UNICEF notes that the actual number of victims may be much higher.
In addition, over 1600 educational institutions and almost 790 medical facilities have been damaged in the three years of war. UNICEF also draws attention to the negative impact of the war on children's development, especially on their mental health and learning. Almost 30% of adolescents feel sad and hopeless, which prevents them from leading a normal life, and these moods often affect more girls.
"The war has caused irreparable losses to children and adolescents, affecting their development and well-being at key stages of their lives," the Foundation said.
Reportedly, due to the war, children face serious difficulties in accessing education: 40% of students study only online or combine distance learning with face-to-face education. UNICEF emphasizes that the average loss in education is 2 years in reading and 1 year in math.
UNICEF also reports that it is working with the Government of Ukraine and partners to lay the foundations for the country's recovery and long-term development. This includes strengthening the health, education and social protection systems so that children have access to the services they need and can regain their potential.
"All children without exception must be protected from the effects of war in accordance with international humanitarian and human rights law. What children in Ukraine need most of all is sustainable peace and a chance to realize their full potential," Russell emphasized.
