Europe should be ready to defend itself without US – Merz

Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU/CSU alliance and candidate for German chancellor, said that Europe should no longer rely on unconditional protection from the United States.
His statement was quoted by Politico, Censor.NET reports.
"We have to be prepared for the fact that Donald Trump will no longer unconditionally support NATO's mutual defense commitments. That is why, in my opinion, it is very important that Europeans make as much effort as possible to ensure that we are at least able to defend the European continent on our own," the German politician said.
In addition, Merz stated the need to discuss with the UK and France the possibility of Germany being under their nuclear protection.
Earlier it was reported that German chancellor candidate from the CDU/CSU Friedrich Merz said he was shocked by US President Donald Trump's statements about Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
