Location of training ground for testing demining technologies with use of AI determined, - Ministry of Defense

Test site for demining technologies

The Ministry of Defense, together with its partners, has identified a site where a testing ground for the latest demining technologies, including those using artificial intelligence, will be created.

According to Censor.NET, this was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

It is noted that representatives of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, the United Nations Development Program, the Ministry of Economy and the National Association of the Defense Industry visited the location of the future training ground. The meeting participants assessed the effectiveness of the existing facility and discussed the prospects of its use for testing advanced technologies.

"This is the first step in a strategic initiative to create an innovative testing ground. Together with our partners, we have identified key areas for further work and decided to create a training and testing complex for the development of the latest technologies in the field of mine action, where we will not only modernize technologies but also form a bank of innovative solutions. This also opens up new aspects of international partnership," said Olha Drobot, representative of the Main Department of Mine Action.

UNDP and the Ministry of Economy have expressed interest in developing this project as a basis for the formation of a coordination platform for innovation in humanitarian demining.

Next steps:

  • creating a roadmap,
  • forming a working group and
  • preparing for the first tests.

The participants of the offsite meeting emphasized that the creation of such a modern training ground will facilitate the development of the latest technologies that will accelerate humanitarian demining, improve the safety of deminers and reduce risks to civilians.

As a reminder, as of the end of January, the number of mine action operators in Ukraine increased to 80, while at the beginning of 2023 there were only 28.
