Russia seeks to maintain influence over countries that were part of the USSR and launch aggression against them - Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy: Russia may attack former USSR countries

Russia seeks to maintain its influence over those states that were under its control until 1990-91. It may invade these former Soviet states if Ukraine loses its independence.

According to Censor.NET, this was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with foreign leaders and the media.

According to him, Russia is seeking to regain influence in the former Soviet Union and may extend its aggression to other states of the former Soviet Union.

"I would say that all the countries that were under Russia's influence until 1990-91, I think that first of all, Russia seeks to continue its influence, to be present on the territory of these independent countries that were Soviet republics during the Soviet era," the head of state said.

The President named Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia among these countries.

"The most dangerous moment comes when it comes to the Russian-speaking population or the population that is half Estonian and half Russian. If you have a long common history, then there will be a risk. When the same thing was happening in Donbas, they (Russians - ed.) said that they were not occupying our country.

Instead, they said they were protecting the Russian-speaking population. That is why I believe that Estonia has these risks if Ukraine falls. Then I think all these countries will have similar risks," Zelenskyy added.
