The likely future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on February 26.

Following the three-hour conversation at the Elysee Palace, both politicians demonstrated their readiness to start a new chapter in German-French relations, the CDU/CSU bloc said in a statement to dpa. It also states that the talks took place in an exceptionally friendly atmosphere, and the politicians reached agreement on a number of topics and found starting points for joint initiatives.

Merz posted a photo with Macron on his page on the X social network, thanking the French leader for his friendship and trust in German-French relations.

"Together, our countries can achieve great things for Europe," Merz wrote in German and French.
