Ukrainians should take into account our sensitivity to historical issues, - Polish presidential candidate Trzaskowski

Ukrainians and Poles need a ‘sincere conversation’ on a number of important issues, including the history and economic component of Ukraine's membership in the EU.

This opinion was expressed by the presidential candidate of the ruling Civic Coalition, the current mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

Answering a question about whether anti-Ukrainian emotions in the election campaign in Poland could negatively affect the attitude towards Ukrainians, Trzaskowski said: "I hope this will not happen, as military support for Ukraine is in Poland's national interest. Ukrainians are fighting for our freedom, and it is in Poland's national interest that Ukraine has proper security guarantees. Instead, we need common sense in our relations with Ukraine."

He stressed that he did not agree ‘with any attacks, any stigmatisation of Ukrainians in Poland’.

"But we need a sincere conversation about how we see the future of our relations, a sincere conversation about how Ukrainians should take our sensitivity to historical issues seriously, a sincere conversation about how negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU will be very difficult and, unfortunately, will last for many years. This applies, in particular, to the agricultural sector," the Polish presidential candidate said.

As a reminder, the first round of the presidential election in Poland will be held on 18 May, with a possible second round on 1 June.
