Leyen on the ReArm Europe project

By approving the European Commission's Rearm Europe proposalto invest 800 billion euros in defense this week, the European Union has laid the groundwork for the possible creation of a European defense union.

According to Censor.NET, citing Yevropeiska Pravda, this was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen believes that a historic event took place this week, because with the approval of her plan"Rearm Europe", the foundations for the creation of a European defense union were laid.

"This week brought unanimous support forthe Rearm Europe program. You are already familiar with the 800 billion package for defense. And this is a historic event. It can become the basis for a European defense union," the European Commission President said.

She emphasized that "we will promote the plan to rearm Europe with full dedication.

"The direction of movement has always been clear. What has changed over these 100 days is a new sense of urgency... Our European values, democracy, freedom, the rule of law are under threat... Our ironclad commitments are being called into question. Everything has become transactional. The pace of change has accelerated, and the necessary actions must be bold and decisive," she said.

"If we can join forces with other like-minded countries such as the UK, Norway or Canada, the potential is even greater. And it's important to note that economic strength and the European rearmament plan are two sides of the same coin," Ursula von der Leyen said.

One of the areas of the plan is to create a new fund of 150 billion euros in loans for EU countries to invest in defense, such as air and missile defense, artillery systems, missiles and ammunition, drones and defense systems, as well as other needs ranging from cyber to military mobility.

The Commission also proposes to remove the restrictions imposed by EU rules on public spending in the case of defense investments.
