G7 prepares new sanctions against Russia - Lammy

Lammy on putting pressure on Russia to negotiate

The Group of Seven (G7) countries are planning to continue to put pressure on Russia to force it to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to Censor.NET, citing Radio Liberty, this was stated by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy during a speech in parliament.

"If Putin does not deliver, and I must tell the house that I currently see no sign yet that he is, the G7 meeting helped us ready the tools to get Russia to negotiate seriously. We’re not waiting for the Kremlin. If they reject a ceasefire, we have more cards that we can play," Lammy said.

The minister noted that the unprecedented G7 sanctions have already undermined Russia's economy, causing cuts in social spending, rising inflation and interest rates, so the G7 countries are ready to tighten restrictions to force Russia to negotiate seriously and stop its aggression against Ukraine.

"In Canada we discussed where we can go further to target their energy and defence sectors, further squeeze their oil revenues and use frozen Russian assets. At the same time we will keep up our support to Ukraine – Europeans clearly need to shoulder our share of this responsibility," he said.

As a reminder, the UK and the EU are looking for ways to increase support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia. They are also looking to increase defence spending as part of the pressure on Russia ahead of peace talks on Ukraine.
