Trump is ready to maximize sanctions against Russia, if necessary - Bessent

U.S. President Donald Trump is ready to maximize economic sanctions against Russia to force it to peace talks.
This was stated by the head of the US Department of the Treasury Scott Bessent, The Times reports, Censor.NET informs.
The head of the US Treasury said that Trump had instructed him to prepare US sanctions in case additional pressure on Russia is needed.
Bessent assessed the level of sanctions against Russia imposed by the Joe Biden administration as six out of ten.
"We have maintained these sanctions, and President Trump has instructed me to go to ten out of ten if necessary to get President Putin to the negotiating table," the US minister said.
At the same time, Bessent said that he was optimistic that the US president would be able to persuade the Russian dictator without imposing additional sanctions.
"However, all options remain open, including maximum energy sanctions against Russia, if necessary," the US Treasury Secretary added.
Earlier, the White House said that US President Donald Trump could impose sanctions on Russia if his talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are unsuccessful.
