Kallas discusses €40 billion in military aid for Ukraine – European Commission

Kallas

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas is negotiating with EU member states on an initiative to provide military aid to Ukraine totaling 40 billion euros.

This was announced on March 21 at a briefing in Brussels by the European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper, Censor.NET reports citing the EP.

According to her, the EU should increase military aid to Ukraine in response to current challenges. Last year, Kyiv received more than €20.5 billion in military support from the EU, and this is not enough.

Kallas suggests focusing on three key areas:

  • supplying artillery ammunition worth 5 billion euros;
  • providing air defense systems, missiles, drones and fighter jets;
  • support for the restoration of Ukrainian military brigades.

A mechanism for distributing financial contributions among EU countries according to their gross national income (GNI) is also being considered. However, this proposal is controversial, and negotiations are ongoing.

As a reminder, the EU failed to agree on the allocation of 5 billion euros for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine.
