Hungary to withdraw from International Criminal Court

Hungary wants to withdraw from the International Criminal Court

Hungarian Justice Minister Bence Tuzhon has announced that Hungary is going to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He said this at a meeting of ambassadors held last week at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Censor.NET reports.

If Hungary refuses to become a member of the International Criminal Court, the government must first submit a proposal for withdrawal to the National Assembly. If the majority supports it, the Cabinet of Ministers will officially initiate the recall. The process can take up to a year.

The political decision to withdraw from the ICC was actually made a few weeks ago, but the government was still waiting to see what US President Donald Trump's position on the ICC would be.

When Trump announced that he would impose sanctions on the Hague court over the arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, "the Hungarian government took this as a green signal."

As a reminder, on April 2, the Israeli prime minister is due to visit Hungary under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

It should be noted that Hungary has signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and ratified it. This means that Budapest formally approved the statute, but did not change its legislation to implement it. Therefore, Budapest is not going to execute the arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
