Trump declares state of emergency to protect US economy

Trump declares state of emergency

Following the introduction of large-scale duties on imported goods, US President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency in the country's economy.

According to Censor.NET, this is said in a statement by the White House.

"I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, believe that the underlying conditions, including the lack of reciprocity in our bilateral trade relations, different tariff rates and non-tariff barriers, and the economic policies of the United States‘ trading partners that depress domestic wages and consumption, as evidenced by the large and persistent annual trade deficit in US goods, pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security and the economy," the statement said.

It is emphasised that the threat originates mainly outside the United States, "in the domestic economic policies of key trading partners and structural imbalances in the global trading system".

As a reminder, Trump has signed an executive order imposing a minimum 10 per cent tariff on almost all goods entering the US. For some countries, the tariffs are higher. In particular, China - 34%, the European Union - 20%.
