The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, which won the German parliamentary elections in February, Friedrich Merz, will officially become German Chancellor on May 6.

This is reported by Reuters, citing sources in the party and Tagesschau, Censor.NET reports.

According to media reports, the first meeting of the new Bundestag is scheduled for May 5 following the results of the early elections on February 23.

The Conservatives and their partners from the center-left SPD have agreed on this date, sources from both party blocs added.

On April 9, the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) announced the formation of a ruling coalition.

According to the agreement, the CDU will get the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the SPD will get the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Defense.

The coalition also promised to provide comprehensive assistance to Ukraine and reaffirmed Ukraine's long-term membership in NATO.
