Witkoff–Putin meeting is step toward ceasefire in Ukraine – White House

Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Witkoff

The White House considers the meeting between Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin a step toward a ceasefire in Russia's war against Ukraine.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the administration of US President Donald Trump, Karoline Leavitt, Censor.NET reports citing Suspilne.

According to her, negotiations on a ceasefire and an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war are "constantly ongoing.

"President Trump has been quite open about his dissatisfaction with both sides of the conflict, and he wants this war to end. We believe we have the leverage to negotiate an end to the war. And the president is determined," Leavitt said.

As a reminder, U.S. Special Representative Witkoff met with Putin in St. Petersburg on April 11.

The day before, Wittkoff met with the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, who was the Kremlin's representative in peace talks with the United States in Saudi Arabia over Russia's war against Ukraine. Witkoff and Dmitriev also met on April 2 and 3 in Washington, D.C., amid President Trump's claims that Putin was delaying talks to end the war in Ukraine.
