Barrot after Russian attack on Sumy: EU should impose toughest sanctions against Russia

Jean-Noël Barrot on Trump’s assistance to Ukraine

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on the European Union to impose the toughest sanctions against Russia in response to the massacre of civilians in Sumy.

He said this on the sidelines of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, Censor.NET reports citing the EP.

"This weekend, the horrors in Ukraine reached their climax with the massacre on Palm Sunday. In the northeast of the country, innocent civilians were twice targeted by Vladimir Putin's missiles," Barro said.

He recalled that the International Criminal Court has already issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes, and emphasized that if the Russian president continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire, he must be forced to do so by sanctions pressure.

"That is why I call on the European Union to impose the toughest sanctions against Russia to crush its economy and prevent it from fueling its military efforts," the minister emphasized.

Barrot also expressed hope that the United States, which, in his words, "has invested a lot of time and energy in trying to achieve a ceasefire," would also be able to increase sanctions pressure on Moscow.
