The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has codified the Kolibri 13 FR1 relay carrier.

The system was developed by TAF Industries at the request of, and in cooperation with, the Darknode unit of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, the developer’s press service said.

The Kolibri 13 FR1’s primary role is to extend the radio horizon and bring strike FPV drones into the area of interest.

"It improves the radio horizon in difficult terrain and environments. Say the enemy is hiding behind a slag heap, beyond several tree lines, in dense urban development where the signal for a strike kamikaze drone won’t penetrate. The pilot launches the Kolibri 13 relay carrier and relays the signal into the grid square where it’s needed," a TAF Industries representative explained.

If the link with the operator is lost, the Kolibri 13 FR1 automatically returns to the launch area.

Technical specifications of the Kolibri 13 FR1 relay carrier

  • Navigation without GPS, along a preset track

  • Tactical range: up to 5 km

  • Optical stabilization of drone

  • Flight altitude: up to 1,000 m

  • Endurance: 30+ minutes

  • Battery capacity: from 25,200 mAh

  • Control link: ELRS / digital

  • Control frequencies: up to 2,700 MHz

  • Video link: digital (2.4 GHz) / analog (5.8 GHz)

  • Video antenna: horn type

The key feature of TAF Industries’ relay carrier is that it is a complete package with an integrated repeater and optical stabilization that functions without GPS. The repeater itself is modular, allowing quick component swaps for the exact frequencies used by specific units.

The system operates in two modes, day and night, though for now these are two separate airframes.

TAF Industries added that Ukrainian troops are already successfully employing the system in the combat zone.
