Another Russian military intelligence agent has been exposed in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The occupiers recruited a 30-year-old conscript from one of the brigades fighting in the Kharkiv direction.
This was reported by the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine, according to Censor.NET.
Details
The agent passed on to the occupiers the locations of his unit and adjacent units of the Defence Forces, against which the Russian Federation was preparing a series of strikes.
The SSU exposed and documented the perpetrator at the initial stage of his intelligence activities and then detained him.
Measures were also taken to secure the locations of Ukrainian defenders in the frontline zone and on the front line.
Recruitment
The man came to the attention of the Russian GRU when he posted pro-Kremlin comments on Telegram channels.
After being recruited, he travelled around the region in a service vehicle, marking the geolocation of the Defence Forces on Google Maps.
The Russians were most interested in the coordinates of reserve command posts, logistics depots and artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Russians also tried to find out the locations of air defence firing positions covering Ukrainian ground forces.
Returning to the military unit after reconnaissance missions, the agent summarised the collected data for transmission to his supervisor, an employee of the 316th Reconnaissance Centre of the GRU of the Russian Federation.
After one such communication session, the "mole" left the restricted area without permission to "lay low" at the home of a close acquaintance in the Zhytomyr region.
During searches, a smartphone with evidence of working for the enemy was seized from the soldier. Two combat grenades and almost 300 g of explosives, which he had taken with him when fleeing the military unit, were also found in his possession.
He has now been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: high treason and illegal handling of weapons.
He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
