The bank employee came to the attention of the Russians because of his activity on a banned social network.

After being recruited, the agent received "test" tasks from his handler in Russia to conduct reconnaissance near the bases of the Defence Forces in Kyiv.

Over the weekend, the banker walked around the area and photographed buildings that, in his opinion, could be used by Ukrainian defenders.

"He was then tasked with gathering information about the financial institution's clients among the military and volunteers who opened accounts to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

He was also supposed to give the occupiers the coordinates of the backup data centre where the bank's database and its users are stored," the statement said.

He has now been notified of suspicion of high treason. The man is in custody without the right to bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
