Corruption is preventing us from ending war in position of strength. We need elections, - Fedorov
It is possible to holdelections during the war in Ukraine; this will help to revitalise the institutions of government and contribute to the fight against corruption amongst senior officials.
This was stated by former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov during an interview, according to Censor.NET.
What does Fedorov think about holding elections during the war?
"We can see what a large number of high-ranking officials are up to," said Fedorov, recalling Operation ‘Forest Gump’ and a published excerpt from a dialogue in which participants discussed the need to lead and control corruption.
In his view, to govern the country effectively and root out corruption, it is necessary to hold elections in Ukraine – presidential, parliamentary and local alike.
Fedorov dismissed the authorities’ claim that it is impossible to hold elections during a war as a myth.
Moreover, he expressed concern that the war may not end in the coming years, and therefore it is still worth preparing for the elections and finding a way to hold them even in the midst of hostilities.
"We have achieved many other things that no one in the world thought possible… Ukraine will be able to find a way to restore democracy. Because today, the war is about the system of governance, about the quality of the decisions taken. They must be impartial. Corruption is preventing us from ending the war in a position of strength. There are a great many people who have set up their own schemes and are holding back the right decisions from being made. I have felt these changes in the Ministry of Defence," he noted.
What led up to this?
- On 18 August, former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov recorded an address to Ukrainians in which he stated that the country must find a mechanism for holding elections during the war.
- The President’s Office described former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s idea of holding elections during the war as "a complete lack of realism".
