General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine discusses lowering upper mobilisation age limit to 50–55 – Kostenko
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is discussing lowering the upper mobilisation age limit for Ukrainian citizens liable for military service to 50–55.
Roman Kostenko, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, said this in a comment to Ukrainska Pravda, Censor.NET reports.
What exactly is being discussed?
"The General Staff is discussing the possibility of changing mobilisation approaches to account for age, including limiting the mobilisation of citizens over 50 or 55, except for those liable for military service who have specialities that are in short supply or critically needed by the military," Kostenko said.
The MP stressed that no final decision had been made and that possible options were still being discussed. According to him, lowering the upper mobilisation age limit would not necessarily require legislative amendments — "an appropriate administrative decision would be sufficient." The secretary of the defence committee considers this approach appropriate.
Lower age threshold
Kostenko also commented on lowering the mobilisation age below 25.
"As for lowering the mobilisation age below 25, this issue is not currently under consideration. Such a decision cannot be implemented without legislative amendments," the MP added.
- Earlier, during a broadcast with journalist Iryna Romaliiska on the Butusov Plus YouTube channel, Roman Kostenko commented on the initial proposals developed by the Ministry of Defence under Yevhenii Khmara to reform mobilisation procedures.
- According to him, the possible measures being considered by the Ministry of Defence together with the General Staff also include lowering the upper conscription age limit.
