Macron is set to meet Trump in US to steer him towards ’right decisions’ on Ukraine, - media
French President Emmanuel Macron, at a meeting with US leader Donald Trump on 22 September in New York, is seeking to persuade him to step up support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.
BFMTV reports this, citing sources close to the French leader, according to Censor.NET.
The purpose of the meeting
Macron, who is due to meet Trump in New York on 22 September, intends to "speak frankly" with the US president and "encourage" him to step up support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia, according to media reports.
"This is always a good opportunity to set the tone ahead of this week’s high-level General Assembly and to discuss matters frankly with the US President, as the President of the Republic always does", the channel’s sources added.
"As at all critical moments, this will be an opportunity to steer President Trump towards the right decisions, particularly regarding Ukraine, to continue efforts to support Ukraine and to step up pressure on Russia", explained sources close to Macron.
Meeting schedule
- The meeting between the two presidents is scheduled for 17:35 New York time (00:35 Kyiv time) ahead of the opening of the UN General Assembly.
- Whilst in the US, Macron also plans to meet with the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to sources, Zelenskyy is expected to meet with Trump on 22 September in New York.
