EU will not reinstate sanctions against Usmanov and Fridman in near future, - Kallas

Usmanov and Fridman will not be subject to sanctions again in the near future

The EU’s High Representative, Kaja Kallas, has stated that the European Union will not, in the near future, raise the issue of reimposing sanctions on the Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, who were recently removed from the sanctions lists.

This is reported by Censor.NET, citing the European Parliament.

"I don’t see this happening with regard to these two individuals any time soon," said Callas, responding to a question about the possibility of Friedman and Usmanov being re-imposed under European sanctions.

She also pointed out that the EU  is currently working on around 1,600 new additions to the sanctions lists.

"I would like to emphasise once again: following the decisions taken two weeks ago, 2,998 items on the sanctions lists will remain in force for three years. In other words, we no longer have to decide on extending their validity every six months," added the EU High Representative.

She noted that EU Member States "are free to propose names which, in their view, should be included on the sanctions list", and that ultimately the decision is taken by the Member States.

What is known about the lifting of sanctions?

  • The EU has extended the restrictive measures against individuals responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine by 36 months, but has removed the Russian oligarchs Usmanov and Fridman from the sanctions list.
  • Lithuania initiated the imposition of national sanctions against the Russian oligarchs Usmanov and Fridman following their removal from the EU sanctions list.
  • Latvia will also impose national sanctions against the Russian oligarchs Usmanov and Fridman after it relented and lifted its veto on their removal from the EU sanctions list.
