France has tested its new M51.3 ballistic missile from nuclear-powered submarine for first time. VIDEO

France has successfully carried out the first test launch of its new M51.3 intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine. The country’s President, Emmanuel Macron, took part in the test launch.

He wrote about this on the social media platform X, and the French Ministry of the Armed Forces reported this, according to Censor.NET.

Rocket launch

The launch was carried out from aboard the nuclear submarine Le Vigilant, whilst the trials were monitored from aboard the multi-purpose frigate Auvergne.

The missile was launched from the coast of Finistère. It landed in the North Atlantic, "several hundred kilometres from any coastline". It is noted that the missile was launched without a nuclear warhead and in compliance with France’s international obligations.

The Directorate-General for Armaments, the Atomic Energy Commission, Ariane Group, Naval Group and the French Navy were all involved in the testing and development of the new missile.

Macron’s reaction

"Few in the world possess such technologies. This technical achievement is further proof of the effectiveness of our deterrence, the reliability of which is assured. To be free, one must inspire fear; and to inspire fear, one must be strong", said the French leader.

Macron is one of those who has repeatedly warned of a change in the nature of Russian aggression, as evidenced by the intensification of hybrid attacks. The French President has promised that they "will not go unanswered".

"Our future strategic submarines are currently under construction. This year saw the launch of a programme to develop strategic hypersonic and manoeuvrable missiles, which will be deployed by our air deterrent forces. Our nuclear deterrent protects us and will continue to do so," the French President clarified.

More about the M51.3 rocket

  • The M51.3 is a three-stage, solid-fuelled, sea-based intercontinental ballistic missile developed by France. It was entered into service on 24 October 2025 as part of the modernisation of the country’s ocean-based nuclear deterrent.
  • It is equipped with new TNO-2 nuclear warheads and boasts increased range, accuracy and improved capability to penetrate a potential adversary’s missile defence system.  The M51.3 missiles will form the main armament of France’s future SNLE 3G-class nuclear-powered submarines, which are set to replace the Le Triomphant-class submarines after 2035.
