Ukrainian man has pleaded guilty to murder of priest and attempted murder of four people in Poland; he faces life imprisonment

In Poland, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Igor M., pleaded guilty to the murder of priest Stanisław Zboinowicz and the attempted murder of four other people in the city of Jarosław. The suspect could not be questioned until after a second psychiatric evaluation, which confirmed his capacity to participate in legal proceedings.
According to Censor.NET, citing Wirtualna Polska, this was stated by Malgorzata Tacyuch-Kurasevich, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl.
According to her, on October 7, experts issued a report that allowed for procedural actions to be taken involving the suspect. That same day, the prosecutor formally charged the man and questioned him in the presence of an interpreter and a court-appointed defense attorney.
"Ihor M. admitted to the charges against him and exercised his right to remain silent," said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office.
The man is charged with murder and the attempted murder of four people. Under Polish law, he faces life imprisonment.
Why couldn't the suspect have been questioned earlier?
The prosecutor's office called in psychiatric experts three times to assess the man's condition. Preliminary findings, received in September and early October, indicated acute psychotic disorders and an inability to establish logical communication with him.
As a result, the investigators were unable to carry out the necessary procedural actions.
At the same time, the experts’ latest conclusion pertains exclusively to the suspect’s ability to participate in the proceedings. The question of his mental capacity at the time the alleged crimes were committed has not yet been resolved and requires a separate expert evaluation.
An attack on the grounds of a monastery in Yaroslavl
According to the investigation, on September 24, 2026, on the grounds of the Benedictine nuns’ convent in the Polish city of Jarosław, a man attacked Father Stanisław Zboinowicz with a knife. He struck the priest numerous times, causing his death.
In addition, the suspect is charged with the attempted murder of Krzysztof G., priests Marek Penkowski and Adrian Mantykevich, and Ewa S.
The victims sustained injuries, including serious, life-threatening injuries. The condition of the two men who were most severely injured—who are being treated at the Yaroslav Hospital—has improved and is currently stable.
Igor M. remains in custody. The court ruled that he be held for three months in a forensic psychiatric ward with enhanced security measures. безпеки.
