UN Security Council will convene for emergency meeting on October 9 at Ukraine’s request; Kyiv is pushing for resolutions against Russian aggression

On Friday, October 9, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at Ukraine’s request due to the intensification of Russian attacks on the civilian population. Kyiv is calling on its international partners not to limit themselves to mere statements, but to take concrete action to put an end to Russian aggression.
According to Censor.NET, Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, stated this to reporters.
The meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. New York time, which is 10:00 p.m. in Kyiv.
According to Melnik, the meeting will be dedicated to a new level of Russian terror against Ukraine. The diplomat stressed that the Security Council must fulfill its mandate as set forth in the UN Charter, rather than limiting itself to discussions.
"The Security Council must move from discussions to resolutions, demanding that Russia end its barbaric war of aggression, stop shelling Ukrainian civilians, and withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory," the permanent representative said.
Russia is trying to make terror against civilians a common occurrence
Melnik warned that Moscow is constantly escalating the conflict, attempting to reach unprecedented levels of brutality in its attacks on the civilian population.
According to him, the Kremlin is counting on the international community gradually becoming accustomed even to Russia’s most egregious crimes, and on its reaction being limited to yet another round of condemnations with no practical consequences.
The diplomat also criticized the approach of certain partners who believe it is sufficient to hold scheduled monthly Security Council meetings on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In his view, this practice does not correspond to the nature and scale of Russian aggression.
Ukraine will demand an immediate response from the Security Council
Melnik thanked Greece, which holds the presidency of the UN Security Council in October, for its prompt support of the Ukrainian initiative.
The meeting was convened the very next day after Kyiv issued the relevant request.
The Permanent Representative emphasized that Ukraine will continue to seek urgent Security Council meetings in response to the escalation of Russian attacks.
He called on the Security Council member states, first and foremost, to move beyond diplomatic rhetoric and adopt concrete decisions that would require Russia to end the war, cease shelling the civilian population, and withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.
