Russia’s war against Ukraine has no military solution – China at UN

China is calling on Russia and Ukraine to seek a path to peace through dialogue and negotiations. Beijing emphasizes the need to de-escalate tensions, prevent the conflict from spreading, and reach a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement.
According to Censor.NET, citing Ukrinform, Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative, made this statement during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
According to the Chinese diplomat, war cannot lead to victory, and the conflict cannot be resolved by military means alone.
"China calls on the parties to remain committed to the pursuit of peace. There can be no winners in war; conflict has no future and cannot be resolved by military means. We must give peace a chance," said Sun Lei.
He emphasized that the top priorities are to de-escalate the situation, prevent the conflict from spreading beyond the battlefield, and prevent further escalation of hostilities.
The diplomat also noted that historical experience shows the need for a political settlement even when there are significant differences between the parties.
"History has shown that, regardless of the scale of the conflict and the depth of the divide, a resolution is ultimately possible only through dialogue and negotiations," he emphasized.
Beijing hopes that contacts between Kyiv and Moscow will continue
Sun Lei stated that there has been some communication between Ukraine and Russia recently. At the same time, he said, the differences between the parties’ positions remain significant.
China hopes that the talks will continue and that the parties will demonstrate the political will to reach a comprehensive, robust, and binding peace agreement.
"We hope that the parties involved will act in the fundamental and long-term interests of their countries, respect each other's legitimate security concerns, and address the root causes of the crisis based on full and comprehensive adherence to the principles of the UN Charter," the Chinese diplomat said.
He assured that China would continue to make efforts to promote a political settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
China has declared its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states
Sun Lei also emphasized the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and to abide by the UN Charter.
"As for Ukraine, China has always maintained that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, that the provisions of the UN Charter must be observed… and that all efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the crisis must be supported," he said.
According to the diplomat, Beijing will continue to cooperate with the international community to achieve peace and a political resolution to the war as soon as possible.
