An explosion occurred on the "Central Asia-Center" gas pipeline in the Penza Region of the Russian Federation. Following the incident, a flare approximately 70 meters high erupted, and the gas supply was shut off. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
This was reported by Censor.NET, citing Russian Telegram channels.
The incident occurred near the village of Volchkovo. After the explosion, the gas pipeline was shut off. Later, the grass caught fire at the scene. According to preliminary reports, there were no fatalities or injuries.
What is known about the gas pipeline?
The "Central Asia-Center" (CAC) gas pipeline is a system of main gas pipelines connecting Central Asian gas fields with Russia. The pipelines run through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan to the Russian gas transmission system.
What makes it unique is that the direction of gas flow can change. Historically, the system was used to supply Central Asian gas to Russia, but since October 2023, part of it has been used to transport Russian gas to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan.
Previous attacks
Last December, this gas pipeline was blown up in the Volgograd region. A source in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that another mysterious "ground subsidence" had occurred, causing the "Central Asia-Center" gas pipeline to fail.
In August, explosions were also heard on the "Central Asia-Center" gas pipeline in the Volgograd region.
