Strack-Zimmermann hopes to see Ukraine in EU and NATO soon

Strack-Zimmermann hopes for Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO

Ukraine must become part of the European security system, and its membership in the European Union is important not only from a political standpoint but also from a strategic one. At the same time, in order to join, Kyiv must overcome its internal problems, particularly corruption.

According to Censor.NET, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense, stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"Membership in the European Union would also be important from a security perspective. Unfortunately, we are currently learning from tragic experience how to defend ourselves and what kinds of threats exist. These include not only traditional military threats, but also cyberattacks, hybrid attacks, state-sponsored terrorism, and low-cost operatives who are recruited to carry out specific tasks," the MEP noted.

She also drew attention to Russia’s use of mafia-like structures. At the same time, the MEP stressed that Ukraine must combat corruption. This is one of the conditions for accession to the European Union, so the Ukrainian government is expected to address this issue.

"I am optimistic that Ukraine will be able to do this. And I hope that we will soon see Ukraine in the European Union—and even better, in NATO as well," she said.

There are no specific deadlines

When commenting on the prospect of Ukraine's accession to the European Union by the end of 2028, Strack-Zimmermann did not specify any particular dates.

"First and foremost, the war must end. After all, we're talking about a country that is currently at war. In addition, Ukraine needs to resolve its internal problems. That's why I can't give you a specific date," she said.

At the same time, the chair of the European Parliament committee emphasized that everyone has a stake in Ukraine becoming part of the EU, particularly for security reasons.
