A court in Estonia has found a 37-year-old Ukrainian citizen guilty of illegally transporting migrants across the border. The man was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison, of which he must serve two months.
Estonian broadcaster ERR reports this, according to Censor.NET.
According to police, the 37-year-old Ukrainian was detained on October 4 in Mäeküla, Järva County. Officers found four foreign nationals in his car who had entered Estonia illegally — one Algerian citizen and three Somali citizens.
Pärnu County Court considered the case under a simplified procedure and sentenced the man to one year and ten months in prison.
However, he must serve only two months. He will not have to serve the remainder of the sentence if he commits no further intentional offense during a probation period of two and a half years.
After serving his sentence, the Ukrainian will be deported from Estonia and banned from entering the country for five years.
Under Estonian law, illegally transporting foreign nationals across the state border is punishable by up to three years in prison. If the transport endangers migrants’ lives or health, the sentence can be up to seven years.
