Russian President Vladimir Putin made information about casualties among servicemen of the Defense Ministry during special operations in peacetime a state secret.
The relevant presidential decree was published on the official website of legal information, Censor.NET reports citing Lenta.ru.
By the same decree Putin classified information about individuals studied by intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the purpose of confidential cooperation in terms of intelligence, counterintelligence and other operational and investigative activities. Previously, only information on the persons currently or previously involved in such cooperation was classified.
Amendments were made to decree of President Boris Yeltsin #1203 dated Nov. 30, 1995 "On approval of the list of information classified as state secret." Previously only information on casualties of the army personnel during military operations was regarded as a state secret.
